Centenary Celebration of AR Periyannan & Meenakshi and the Legacy of Ponni Magazine

‘Ponni’ – An historic magazine that championed the Dravidian movement

Ponni was a historic Tamil magazine that ran from 1947 to 1955. At a time when publications supporting Thanthai Periyar’s Dravidian ideology were rare, Ponni stood out as a beacon and was one of the first magazines to champion the Dravidian movement.

The Magazine also featured significant contributions from eminent leaders and writers of those times. Many of my readers may recognize the names included Thanthai Periyar, Arignar Anna,  Bharathidasan, Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, Ka. Appaduraiyar, T. K. Srinivasan, and many others who were included in this list of writers.

Ponni was instrumental in creating, and nurturing 47 poets under the “Bharathidasan Parambarai,” a poetic lineage inspired by Bharathidasan’s ideals. These poets, including Suratha, Mudiarasan, Vanidasan, V. C. Kulandaiswamy became influential voices in Tamil literature and helped expand the landscape of rationalist, socially conscious Tamil poetry.

A deeply personal connection

Ponni was founded by AR Periyannan and his nephew Murugu Subramanium. Later, though Subramanium left for Malaysia, Periyannan continued to run Ponni

AR. Periyannan was honest & a simple man with a vision. He was born on August 12, 1925, in Athangudi near Karaikudi. AR. Periyannan and his wife Meenakshi Periyannan had six girls and two boys — 8 children in total — named Tamilarasi, Ponni, Poongothai, Sulochana, Vallikan, Visalakshi, Alagappan, and Ravi. He believed in education as a tool for social upliftment. All eight of his children (including all six girls) pursued higher education and each rose on their own merits, embodying the ideals he lived by.

The first child born to his third daughter – Poongothai along with ‘Aanazhagan’ Chidambaram is whose newsletter you are reading today. 🙂

Though more than 30 years have passed since my grandfather Periyaṇṇan Ayya’s demise, the family he nurtured continues to thrive and stays vibrant even today.

Preserving familial, historical, and cultural legacy

What‬‭ began‬‭ as‬‭ a‬‭ humble‬‭ family‬‭ tribute‬‭ to‬‭ mark‬‭ the‬‭ centenary‬‭ of‬‭ my grandparents has since grown‬‭ into‬‭ a‬‭ significant‬‭ literary‬‭ revival‬‭ effort.‬‭ In‬‭ the process, we discovered original volumes of‬‭ Ponni magazine,some of which are rare collectors‬‭ editions.‬‭

Recognizing‬ their‬‭ historical‬‭ value,‬‭ Tamil‬‭ professors‬‭ especially‬‭ from‬‭ the‬‭ KaniTamil‬‭ Peravai‬‭ at‬‭ Madras‬ Christian‬‭ College‬‭ (MCC)‬‭ encouraged‬‭ us‬‭ to‬‭ preserve‬‭ and restore them, likening Ponni to foundational works like Periyar’s‬‭ Kudi Arasu‬‭.‬

This‬‭ led‬‭ to‬‭ a‬‭ meaningful‬‭ academic‬‭ collaboration‬‭ with‬‭ professors‬‭ and‬‭ students‬‭ at‬‭ MCC‬‭,‬ who‬ helped‬‭ study,‬‭ compile,‬‭ and‬‭ contextualize‬‭ these‬‭ treasures.‬‭‬‭

We‬‭ also collaborated‭ with‬‭ the‬ Roja‬‭ Muthiah‬‭ Research‬‭ Library (RMRL)‬‭ to‬‭ digitize‬‭ the‬‭ complete‬‭ Ponni‬‭ archives‬‭ for public access at the centenary event. The RMRL, among others, play a vital role in preserving literary works such as Ponni, helping society reconnect with its cultural roots and understand the enduring legacy of Tamil literature.

This Ponni revival effort stands at the intersection of heritage preservation, student collaboration, and academic commitment. This effort serves as an enduring source of inspiration for students and a valuable resource for researchers studying the evolution and impact of the Dravidian movement. I’m very grateful for everyone’s effort towards this initiative.

A special centenary event

In‬‭ addition‬‭ to‬‭ the‬‭ compiled‬‭ editions‬‭ of‬‭ Ponni‬‭,‬‭ we‬‭ have‬‭ also‬‭ authored‬‭ a‬‭ commemorative‬

biography highlighting AR Periyannan’s life and work on his centenary year. This will be released during a very special centenary event, taking place next week.

The Family of AR Periyannan and Meenakshi will formally hand-over the copies of the Ponni magazine to Roja Muthiah Research Library. Professor S. Karunakaran and Students at Madras Christian College will also showcase their compilation work on Ponni at the event. If you are in Chennai, please do come and join us.

Working on this centenary event and writing a book on  my grandparents has been a wonderful and rewarding learning journey for me. Learning more about my grandparents from the people who knew them — their legacy continues to guide and inspire me.  Working with Professors and Students on their research on the Ponni magazine and working on the archival process has been truly rewarding.

Ponni’s story is far from over. There is much that its pages will continue to share for generations of Tamil enthusiasts. This revival effort will deepen understanding of Tamil literary and journalistic traditions, and offer valuable insights into the Dravidian movement and its core values.

There is more to this story that I would love to share with you in future editions. For now thank you for reading. And if you plan to join us next week, I look forward to seeing you there.

Karthik Chidambaram,
Proud Grandson
