Leadership under ‘Pressure’

I watched a movie recently, Pressure, directed by Anthony Maras, and I thought, why not write about it in this week’s Hustle?

The backdrop of the film takes place at the height of World War II, just as the Allies were preparing to launch D-Day, the historic invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (played brilliantly by Brendan Fraser) was tasked with making the ultimate call. But to decide whether a sea landing was even possible, he had to rely almost entirely on his weather team.

Enter Group Captain James Stagg (played by Andrew Scott), a Scottish meteorologist brought in on Winston Churchill’s recommendation. When Stagg arrives, he finds himself leading a brand-new team where he doesn’t exactly feel welcomed or supported. Yet, he displays leadership in his own distinct way. He speaks his mind and stands firm in predicting severe weather, even though virtually everyone else on the team insists the weather will be fine.

At its core, this historical drama highlights how Eisenhower navigated one of the most critical decisions in modern history based on the conflicting advice provided by his meteorology team. Eisenhower was serving as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II, and later went on to become the 34th President of the United States (1953–1961). In fact, in the 1960s, when Eisenhower was asked what made the difference in World War II, he famously remarked that the Allies simply had better meteorologists than Germany.

It really puts into perspective how vital meteorology was in high-stakes situations and, more broadly, how much weather quietly impacts our daily lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Pressure because of the principles it showcases. It’s a remarkable display of leadership, both from Eisenhower in weighing heavy calls and from James Stagg in sticking to his convictions despite intense pressure. It is also about bringing the right people on board, and that makes all the difference.
