Where is Tamil in Jana Nayagan?

I recently watched the lyric video of Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan. As per YouTube, it garnered over 3 million views in the first 3 hours, and this number is bound to grow.

Recently, I wrote a post about the frustrating trend of using English letters to write the Tamil script. The use of English to write Tamil is becoming more common in Tamil cinema, and it is hurting the language. This trickles down. This is something that bothers me a lot.

This is exactly where stars like Vijay can make a difference. Unfortunately, these are lost opportunities. This is not the first time something like this has happened in one of his films. I understand that business involves economics. However, I do not buy the argument that using English letters in the lyric video helps with economic value.

I wouldn’t just blame Vijay, his director, or his producer for this. Each one of us needs to take responsibility. Still, this is where one can lead — to show the world that they are different. Especially for someone like Vijay, who aspires for a political career.

Henry Ford comes to mind. A quote often attributed to him:
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.”

True leadership is about seeing what others cannot — setting a new direction rather than following the crowd. Cinema has that kind of power. When leading stars choose to celebrate the Tamil language authentically, they don’t just make an artistic statement — they inspire millions to take pride in it.

This may not be a fancy blog to write. People may not even appreciate it. However, I strongly believe that I need to use this opportunity to voice my concern.

If Tamil writing slowly disappears, there may be no place even for Tamil actors. Writing Tamil in English signals a dangerous trend, one that threatens our language, our culture, and everything that flows from them.

Thank you for reading.
